Excise police have embarked on a week-long campaign to spread awareness

Ahead of the ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ observed every year on June 26, the Prohibition and Excise Department of Chittoor district have embarked on a week-long campaign to spread awareness on the dangers of drug abuse, especially psychoactive substances, among the youngsters.

The officials, accompanied by Tirupati Urban Police and local NGO People’s Action for Social Services (PASS), organised a massive rally from the central bus station to town club circle, elucidating on the ill-effects of drugs using placards and slogans, here on Friday morning. Speaking to the media on sidelines of the event, Prohibition and Excise Department's (Chittoor) Deputy Commissioner T. Nagalakshmi remarked that the awareness campaign, alongside the conduct of workshops and competitive events, would focus more on school and college-going students.

Women’s Police Station Deputy Superintendent of Police (Tirupati Urban) M. Katamaraju vouched for scientific approach to deal with drug abuse among youngsters. He said youth had been getting addicted to drugs, particularly those away from their homes, living in individual rooms and hostels. He added that negative repercussions were being observed in the form of crimes, committed by those who abuse drugs. East DSP M. Muniramaiah, Excise Superintendent P. Nagamaradaiah, Assistant Excise Superintendent S. Sreenivas and other officials were present.
