Nellore: The Apollo Hospitals here introduced cell therapy to avoid the knee-replacement surgery with the help of the Mumbai-based Regenerative Services. Disclosing this to media here on Thursday, the hospital orthopedic surgeon Dr Vivekananda Reddy said that the therapy is in vogue in 40 clinics of the hospital across the country.

The therapy facilitates autologous cartilage implantation in place of the damaged parts, he said adding that those who have undergone the therapy will be able to lead normal life within three months. Injuries to bones in accidents, injuries during sports and in cases of avascular necrosis are treated through the therapy done through key-hole. The cost of treatment is put at Rs 6 lakh.

However, in India the cost is highly subsided and costs between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 4 lakh. The hospital here is offering the six-month-long treatment at a discount of 10 per cent. He called upon the people of the city to make use of the cell therapy, which eliminates the need for joint replacement in cases of arthritis.
